What is counseling?

Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers you to accomplish your mental health, wellness, and education goals. I work with you on strategies to overcome obstacles and challenges, and to identify solutions to your problems.

Do I need counseling?

If you feel stuck, and what you are trying on your own is not working, then yes, you would be great fit for counseling. Maybe you have found yourself trying to avoid problems, cope in unhealthy ways, or trying to do it on your own without success. If you are aware of some areas in your life that need improvement, and are experiencing a conviction to change, you would be a great fit for counseling.

What will counseling look like?

The foundation of counseling is the relationship between client and counselor. We will work toward a relationship that is built on rapport and trust. It is important to me that you feel heard and valued. At times, you will lead in conversation about what is on your mind and heart. At other times, I will lead with activities and questions, or guide us to certain topics or discussions. We will work together to navigate your challenges and find solutions to the issues you are facing.

How will you help me?

I have an integrative approach to working with my clients that utilizes various approaches. You have a unique history, childhood, personality, experiences, circumstances, biology, and physiology that shape everything about you. I will customize your care based on what is most beneficial for you, so will explore your struggles and pursue your goals in different ways and experiment with different techniques, activities, resources and tools.

What will we do in my sessions?

Prior to your first session, you will complete an initial assessment and some paperwork. Our first session will be spent reviewing that information, addressing any questions or concerns you may have, and I will begin getting to know you. In the second session, we will talk more in depth about what brought you into counseling and begin discussing your goals. During the third session, we will solidify your goals and develop a plan that will guide our future sessions. We will also regularly evaluate your experience in our counseling sessions, so we can adjust or makes changes as we go to best serve you.

How many sessions do I need?

Typically, counseling is completed when the problems that brought you to counseling are manageable or resolved. Some clients may get all they need from a few sessions, and others may need much longer. Around the third session we will create a plan to address your concerns, and I will recommend a number of sessions it might take to address these. However, you are in control of the amount of sessions you feel comfortable completing, and we will be flexible over time depending on your financial investment, and goals.

How do you help couples and families?

I am sure you have seen that these relationships are intricate and complicated. They can be painful and damaging, but they can also be meaningful, rewarding, and one of life’s greatest joys. Each individual has a unique personality, experiences, and history that have shaped how they view, think, and behave in their couple or family system. I work with spouses and families that want to better understand themselves, and one another to make progress toward change, and meet their goals as a couple or family, so they can have healthier relationships with one another.

How might I be able to receive potential reimbursement from my insurance company?

I do not accept or bill insurance, and I am considered an out-of-network provider, which means you will have to pay for your sessions out of pocket. However, if your insurance has out-of-network benefits, and you meet the criteria to receive a mental health diagnoses, I can provide you a super bill (invoice summary of paid sessions) to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. I have no say in how or if your insurance company reimburses you. You are not guaranteed any reimbursement, and it depends on your insurance, so you will need to contact them to learn more about your specific plan. If an insurance company agrees to reimburse you, it could take a long time before you receive payment. Please note, in order to qualify for potential reimbursement, you will need to meet the criteria for a mental health diagnosis.
